Chiropractic was founded by D.D. Palmer in 1895. Chiropractic is one of the leading primary health care professions which specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and its effects on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatment including spinal manipulation or adjustments (World Federation of Chiropractic, 1999).
Chiropractic specialises primarily in spinal conditions including neck and back pain, however chiropractic philosophy encompasses the body’s innate ability to heal itself and therefore addresses the body as a ‘whole’ rather than focusing just on the area of complaint. The chiropractic profession is regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC)and anyone calling themselves a chiropractor must be registered with the statutory body.
